The first part of November means it’s time to finish getting your house ready for winter. In prepping the lawn, and storing bikes it can be easy to overlook your ducts. Do you know the last time you had your home’s ducts cleaned? If you can’t answer that question, it might be a good time to get it done.
Here are are 4 reasons to get your ducts cleaned before the snow flies!
1. Cleaning Improves the Efficiency of your System.
Think of your ducts as part of the engine of your home: The cleaner they are, the more efficiently the furnace will run, reducing your overall cost. And, just like a well-oiled engine runs longer- so too does a furnace. Clean ducts make it easier for your furnace to run when the temps drop.
2. Cleaning Prevents the Growth of Mold.
With particles of dust, pollen or other debris traveling through ducts nearly daily in the warmer months, it only takes a little bit of moisture for mold to grow. The risk for mold increases if parts of ducting are difficult to reach and easily missed in a quick clean -thus trapping moisture.
3. Cleaning Removes Pet Hair.
This might seem obvious, but pet hair is one of the main things caused build-up in ducts. Pet hair can cause a nest-like effect with hair trapping other particles causing blockage. Even if you don’t have pets, the previous owners of your home could have owned animals – and it’s likely they didn’t get the ducts cleaned as often as they should have.
4. Cleaning Reduces Allergens.
Over the Winter ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles can release these allergy-triggering particles into the home from your supply registers. When you think about having your windows and doors closed and running a heating system for 24 hours – you can imagine the level of irritants that could be present!
