Identify Potential Water Problems With These 4 Tips

Thursday, May 15th, 2014

Water Damage_BlogSouthern Minnesota saw some crazy thunderstorms this past week! And with more scattered showers and rain in the forecast, we’d like to remind everyone that water damage remains an ever-present household risk. Any small water spot on the wall or rotten floor board can quickly turn into a costly nightmare. Mitigate water damage this season by taking the time to identifying problem areas in and outside of your home.

Water Stains – Water stains can signal a number of potential problems with your home, from leaky pipes to a damaged roof. Check around your house for any discoloration on your walls or ceiling, sometimes accompanied by cracks, flaking or peeling paint.

Leaky Pipes – A small leak in your pipes might not leave any visible trace of water damage right away. Listen closely for any dripping sound you might hear behind the walls. Don’t forget to check underneath your cupboards for any signs of potential water damage. A leaky pipe left unfixed can cause serious mold problems and/or severe structural damage to your home.

Mildew Smell – The faint smell of mold or mildew may indicate a moisture problem hiding behind your walls. Always remember to trust your nose.

Water Pooling – Walk around your home after a rain storm. Do you notice any puddles gathering around the foundation of your house? If you do, take immediate action by repairing broken or clogged storm drains. Any water runoff that gathers near your home’s foundation puts your basement at risk for flooding.

Should you experience any water damage to your home, call ServiceMaster by Ayotte at 877-945-0993. Our emergency call center is prepared to handle your call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Unsure – Frozen Pipes

Thursday, January 31st, 2013

Did you wake up this morning to find your water not running like it normally does?  That is exactly what happened to customer’s Jen and Tim.  There was no apparent water damage to speak of, but the water was not flowing thru their pipes.  They made the choice and called in for help right away.  Within a few short hours a team was on site surveying their problem.  Thru the use of the thermal imaging camera, it was discovered that in their garage the hot water lines for the master bath above ran on the outside corner of their home; with the frigid temperatures the line partially froze.  By adding some extra heat into the garage below the bathroom, the pipes slowly thawed and disaster was prevented – no bursting pipes or water to clean up.  Will you be as prepared as Jen and Tim were?

If you think you may have a frozen pipe or a slow leak due to a burst, don’t wait for the damage to become noticeable.  ServiceMaster by Ayotte and DCI are equipped to come out today and scan your home, just like they did for Jen and Tim.  Call us today for more information on Thermal Imaging – 877.945.0993

Facts about Fires

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

Here are some startling facts:

  • One home structure fire was reported every 85 seconds in 2010.
  •  Cooking has been the leading cause of reported home fires and home fire injuries since 1990. Unattended cooking was by far the leading cause of these fires; Two-thirds of home cooking  fires began with ignition of cooking materials, including food, cooking oil, fat, or grease .
  • In 2010, U.S. fire departments responded to 369,500 home structure fires. These fires caused 13,350 civilian injuries, 2,640 civilian deaths, and $6.9 billion in direct damage.

According to an NFPA survey, only one-third of Americans have both developed and practiced a home fire escape plan.

Be Smart – stay safe by planning ahead.
